Program Manager

The Thames Tideway Tunnel will create a cleaner, healthier River Thames and improve the quality of life for all Londoners.

Project Overview

Once completed the Thames Tideway Tunnel will be Europe’s deepest continuous tunnel, travelling 25km through central London to intercept untreated sewage discharges that spill into the tidal Thames and pollute the city’s iconic river.

The Thames Tideway Tunnel is the type of challenging project that CH2M enjoys. As one of the world’s largest and most complex wastewater programmes, the Thames Tideway Tunnel will transform the ecology of London’s river and provide London with a sewerage system fit for at least the next 100 years.

To do this the Thames Tideway Tunnel will create a brand new 25km sewer relief tunnel, intercepting 24 of the most polluting combined sewer overflows (CSOs) where untreated sewage is currently being discharged into the tidal Thames. Drawing on our vast experience in tunnelling and wastewater management, CH2M is managing the engineering, design and delivery of the iconic project.

Building on CH2M’s strong record of managing major infrastructure projects in London, we have experience of delivering city-wide solutions to help deal with the challenges of a growing population and will ensure London remains one of the world’s most competitive cities.

Creating a cleaner, healthier River Thames

The Thames Tideway Tunnel is one of the most significant infrastructure projects being undertaken in London. The sewer relief tunnel once completed will create a cleaner, healthier River Thames and will enable the capital’s sewer system to continue to serve London for at least the next 100 years.

At 25km long and up to 65m deep, the Thames Tideway Tunnel will be the deepest tunnel in Europe, helping tackle 39 million tonnes of untreated sewage that is discharged into the tidal Thames each year through the combined sewer overflows (CSOs). The interceptor sewer will help capture these discharges from the 24 most polluting CSOs along the river and transport the sewage to Europe’s largest water treatment works in Beckton, east London where it is treated and recycled back into the system. Once completed the Thames Tideway Tunnel will reduce overflows into the river from an average of one a week to around two or three a year – making the Thames one of the cleanest rivers in Europe.

CH2M’s water and tunnelling experts are helping deliver one of the most challenging wastewater projects in Europe which will help transform the city’s river and help provide part of a wider strategic solution to the challenge of London’s growing population. Proudly building on a strong record of delivering major urban wastewater treatment projects around the world, CH2M is delighted to be programme managing the Thames Tideway Tunnel. Working collaboratively as part of an embedded team alongside Thames Tideway Tunnel Ltd and client Thames Water we are providing engineering, planning, and communications specialists to progress the delivery of the project, ensuring it remains on budget and on schedule.

With a growing population that is due to increase to 10 million by 2030, the Thames Tideway Tunnel will play a vital role in laying the foundations for human progress in London. CH2M is a company that can help deliver such city-wide solutions to a variety of infrastructure challenges and is proud to be playing a part in ensuring London remains one of the world’s most competitive cities through a world-class infrastructure network that continues to bring social and economic benefits to the city.
