There hasn’t been a major new oil refinery built in the United States since bellbottoms were in style, a song about a dancing duck was on the pop charts and CB radios were all the rage.

That means refinery infrastructure in North America is aging at the same time oil supply is rapidly increasing from shale and Canadian oil sands.

While refiners look to upgrade and expand their operations to meet new supply, workers, communities and regulators are seeking new assurances that facilities are safe and environmentally sound.

These conditions put pressure on plant operators and managers—and no two refineries are the same—to ensure everything runs smoothly and that turnarounds, upgrades and operations and maintenance are delivered as scheduled.

Here at CH2M, we don’t back down from a challenge. Our project delivery philosophy revolves around the building blocks of people, safety, cost management, technology and communication. That’s why CH2M approaches each project the way you see it—as a unique opportunity.

We work with all major units of refineries and provide a unique collaborative model that leverages your internal experience and talent while taking full advantage of our experience and expertise. Our approach results in greater efficiency, cost saving, and predictability.

CH2M has served the downstream oil and gas industry for more than 40 years, completing thousands of refinery-related projects worldwide.

We work in all major units of refineries and provide services from engineering-procurement-construction management (EPCM) to in-plant engineering, construction, turnarounds, process and safety management, and operations and maintenance.

Clients & Projects

Design

With our highly interactive and collaborative project execution model, we bring clients into the project process at multiple points, providing for greater input into and control of the project and leveraging the client’s experience and talent to enable greater efficiency and cost savings.

Confidential Client – Benzene Reduction Project

Going beyond expectations is always top of mind when we work together as a long-term partner with a refinery client. In Washington State, we’ve partnered with one particular client on numerous projects in their refinery. This included a benzene reduction project where we worked closely with their operations representatives, process engineers, safety specialists and our own designers on front-end engineering (FEED) and detail design to select design options with the lowest cost and least impact to online operations, while keeping shutdown schedules in mind.

Construction and Operations Management

In our experience, the result of a well-run facilities management program is typically a 10 to 20 percent (or greater) cost savings. CH2M provides these savings by using proven facilities’ technology, implementing cross-industry best practices and solutions, employing a highly trained and engaged work force and—most importantly—cultivating a close teaming relationship with you, our client. CH2M provides the full range of services necessary to maintain construction and operations, including maintenance program development, maintenance engineering, permitting, small capital construction, procurement, materials management and document control.
