CH2M HILL Donates to The Dow Wetlands in Sarnia, Ontario

On October 20, 2010, CH2M HILL executives were in Sarnia, Ontario, to present a donation to Dow that will further enhance educational programs at The Dow Wetlands. Since the 2006 announcement that Dow would cease manufacturing operations in Sarnia, on-going work at the Vidal Street site has entailed demolition of buildings and site infrastructure, and remediation and environmental restoration of land. CH2M HILL is the company Dow tasked with completing the project within the prescribed timelines.

According to Dow Site Closure Leader, Catherine Creber, “As we approach the conclusion of the closure project I now can look back on the enormity of what we were trying to accomplish and know that we did it. The folks at CH2M HILL have been critical to our success and their support to provide innovative approaches to environmental remediation has been a big part of our team effort. When problems arose, new approaches, new technology and a lot of brainpower went into tackling the issues and creating solutions that ensure work proceeded in the most environmentally sustainable and cost effective manner.”

Stephen Zarlinski, CH2M HILL Program Manager for the Sarnia project, credited his team for their dedication, “It is important to CH2M HILL to recognize our team for the success of the Sarnia site closure and we therefore wanted to create a lasting memorial as a tribute to their efforts. We have constructed a walkway near one of the wetland ponds. The walkway will enhance the educational programs conducted by the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) at The Dow Wetlands and serve as a tribute to the contributions of our team. We believe this donation aligns well with Dow’s efforts to create a sustainable complex that can be enjoyed for years to come by the residents of Sarnia and the surrounding community, and further enhances the Dow legacy in Sarnia.”

Ralph Davidson, CH2M HILL Vice President, was also on hand for the donation event and believes partnerships like the one between Dow and CH2M HILL benefit everyone, “Our donation to The Dow Wetlands signifies our appreciation for the tremendous work performed by our team on the Dow Sarnia Site Closure Project. We have all shared in this success through Dow’s commitment to work together as partners on this innovative and industry-leading approach to environmental closure of large sites like the Dow Sarnia Operation.”

Kimberly Gledhill, Conservation Education/Community Partnership Technician for SCRCA spoke about the importance of the educational programs, and how the walkway will benefit the program and the community. In February 2010, Dow announced its plan to donate the ownership and management of The Dow Wetlands to the SCRCA.
