Diversity Works! Inspiring the next generation of UK grads

At CH2M, we believe that our differences make us extraordinary, and so it’s no surprise that our global family is proudly composed of people with diverse backgrounds, unique skills and varying years of experience.

To further our commitment to our core company values, CH2M’s Global Future Talent (GFT) team in London hosted 30 graduates from universities across the UK at the Elms House office on February 11 for Diversity Works!,  a program supported by the Royal Academy of Engineering. Diversity Works! was organized in partnership with Brunel University and SEO (Sponsors for Educational Opportunity)  to encourage a new generation of women and BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) graduates to enter the working world of engineering, design and program management.

The morning session was led by CH2M’s Fi Fransson, HR Delivery Partner; Karen Hoad, Client Account Manager – Transportation and Shauket Khan, Team Leader – River Engineering, Water, who introduced students to our company’s culture and structure. Following this, students joined David Reid, GFT Recruitment Advisor, for a hands-on skills and confidence-building session, focusing on the best way to frame educational experiences so that they translate clearly to recruiters and hiring managers across our industry.

For our students and our CH2M employee volunteers alike, the highlight of the day was meeting one another for face-to-face interviews. One of our 15 volunteers, Mark Hipwell, Team Leader – Birmingham Bridges, commented that the interviews were a “fantastic way of communicating with future leaders.” Our student guests agreed. “My favorite part of the day was without a doubt the interview,” said Paul Padda, a Masters in Civil Engineering student at University College London. “It was a really useful and invaluable experience, unlike anything I’m normally used to.”

“Our recruitment events help students and graduates gain a deeper understanding of our business, our culture and our projects within a friendly office environment,” said Shaheen Khalifa, Diversity Works! event organizer. “Students attending this event left feeling better prepared for CH2M interviews and armed with the ability to make an informed decision about the business sector they wish to join.”
