4 November, 2009 – CH2M HILL, a global full-service consulting, design, construction, and operations firm, will honor 20 years of municipal excellence during the National League of Cities’ Annual Congress of Cities & Exposition in San Antonio, November 10-14.

“For the past 20 years, CH2M HILL has proudly partnered with the National League of Cities to honor CH2M HILL Founder Jim Howland and to recognize outstanding municipal projects. We congratulate the 2009 winners; they continue a long legacy of strengthening communities through social, economic and environmental leadership,” said Lee McIntire, CH2M HILL president and CEO.

In 1989, CH2M HILL partnered with the National League of Cities (NLC) to create the James C. Howland Awards for Urban Enrichment, named in honor of CH2M HILL’s founding partner and first chief executive officer. Howland was an outstanding engineer, leader, and community citizen who helped countless cities and towns improve water, sanitation, and system-wide infrastructure. His Little Yellow Book, which he authored to provide a moral compass for employees, remains a cornerstone of CH2M HILL's business conduct.

In 2005, the program was renamed the Awards for Municipal Excellence. Now in its 20th year, the program continues to recognize cities and towns for outstanding programs that improve the quality of life in America’s communities. Winners of the awards exemplify excellence in city governance, best practices in municipal policy and model programs that improve the lives of their citizens. CH2M HILL and NLC will reveal the 2009 winners during the Congress of Cities' general session on November 13, and CH2M HILL will host a luncheon for the winners.

In addition to presenting the awards, CH2M HILL will play an active role at the conference as an exhibitor in booth 101 and as the gold sponsor of NLCTV’s official broadcast of the Congress of Cities.

The National League of Cities is the nation’s oldest and largest organization devoted to strengthening and promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.
