10 February 2009 — After 29 years with CH2M Hill —including two decades as head of the architecture group for the global engineering and design firm — Tom Genne retired in 2005. But he didn’t stay idle long.
By the following spring, his former employer was asking him to take on a special assignment: supervising part of a massive reconstruction project in Sri Lanka, the island nation off the coast of India that was devastated by a powerful tsunami in late 2004.
The U.S. Agency for International Development had contracted with CH2M Hill to manage the program, which included building a new bridge, reconstructing three fishing harbors, installing improved water supply systems and rebuilding a number of vocational schools. The reconstruction effort, part of a $135 million U.S. aid package, wrapped up late last year.
