RENO, 23 July 2007 — The Nevada Water Resources Association named the Washoe County Department of Water Resources' Longley Lane Water Treatment Facility Project as its 2007 Major Project of the Year. Washoe County was honored with this award for the new facility's innovative use of technology in treating water from a variety of sources with different treatment issues.

CH2M HILL, a global full-service engineering, construction, and operations firm, provided planning, design, construction management, programming, and startup services for the successful commissioning of the new treatment plant. The new plant sits on approximately 2.5 acres and includes a 14,000-square-foot treatment building, a new well house, a raw water tank, and a chlorine contact tank. Additionally, the plant is designed to allow for future expansion of facilities for the treatment of up to six million gallons per day.

The objectives of the project were to provide safe drinking water to customers at all times and under all conditions, to deliver water at the least possible cost to the customer, and to retain the ability to use the Truckee River surface water rights by resuming the use of a specific well and addressing the surface water connectivity to this well.

"Close collaboration with the Washoe County Department of Water Resources team allowed us to achieve all of the goals set forth at the conception of the Longley Lane Water Treatment Facility," said Jerry Dehn, CH2M HILL's project manager. "This teamwork made this challenging project an enjoyable and successful experience."

The plant employs coagulation and microfiltration to meet the simultaneous objectives of surface water treatment and arsenic removal. The project was orchestrated to be delivered in a fast-track manner using a conventional design, bid, build process, with concept to completion taking less than 28 months. The plant was completed on schedule and within budget.

The Nevada Water Resources Association's mission is to expand awareness of water issues throughout the state. The association holds workshops, hosts conferences, and recognizes companies who exhibit outstanding efforts to improve Nevada's water systems.
