Beijing Olympic Experience
CH2M HILL has worked with Olympic venues since the 1996 Summer Olympic games in Atlanta, Ga. There, the firm provided environmental management planning. Since then, we’ve gained international recognition for our experience in implementing environment management systems (EMS) for our work on the Sydney and Salt Lake City Olympics games as well.
Now, the firm is focused on Beijing, host of the 2008 Summer Games.
Utilizing its global expertise and experience, CH2M HILL assisted the Beijing Municipal Government in its successful bid for the 2008 Olympic Games. As the environmental advisor in Beijing's bid for the Olympics, CH2M HILL worked closely with the Beijing Olympic Games Bidding Committee and the Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau, providing an international arena for Beijing's bid with CH2M HILL's experience and knowledge of the International Olympic Committee.
By taking part in this project, CH2M HILL also gained an in-depth understanding of the Beijing municipal government administration system, thus making it possible for the company to play an active role in Beijing's overall strategic environmental planning.
The firm also developed a master plan concept for the Olympic Sailing Venue in Qingdao, all of which was based on real estate market assessments and marina/cruise industry assessments funded by CH2M HILL. Our master plan concept won a judged design award.
In addition, CH2M HILL served as the core consortia builder for the National Stadium Project (Venue 1) and the Olympic Village/National Indoor Stadium (Venue 4). We formed an internationally renowned consortium for each pursuit, including stadium/arena and commercial real estate experts, and we were responsible for bringing US$80 million in private sector equity for the National Stadium and US$150 million private sector equity for the Olympic Village/Arena.
We are also creating the environmental master plan: the overriding environmental policy for all Olympic events. From planning and construction of the venues to catering and ticketing, the EMP establishes the environmental goals and objectives for the entire Olympic experience.
With this sustainability-focused EMP, we hope to meet the Beijing government’s goal of holding the "greenest" Olympics in history.
